I have been fishing and hunting in North Carolina for about 35 years. I mostly fish for crappie, but I also fish for bream, white perch and do a little saltwater fishing. When it comes to hunting, squirrels are #1. I also hunt ducks, crows, coyotes and deer. In a normal week I'll be outdoors two to five days fishing or hunting. Twice in the Spring and once in the Fall I'll go on fishing vacations for seven to twelve days. Two or three times in the Fall and Winter I'll take hunting vacations. I'm too laid back and like to have way too much fun to be a tournament fisherman (not that I'm that good anyway). Most of my fishing is at High Rock Lake, I regularly fish Tuckertown,Blewett Falls, Falls Lake, Lake Jordan and Holden Beach. Most of my hunting is done in the southeastern portion of Anson County near the Pee Dee River. I also hunt in Rowan, Davidson and Davie Counties along the Yadkin River.
Went to the Honey Hole first thing with David who was home on leave from Fort Carson CO., was there at daylight, first ones at the ramp. No damn water. There was a sign saying that the ramp would be closed for the 10-12 and reopen on the 13th to look for improvements. Off to T-Town. Weather was not bad even though it could not make up its mind what it wanted to do. Water was 70*. Fished brushpiles in the 12-15 range. We caught 41 crappie with only 6 that were big enough for me to want for supper. Not enough so all went back. Color did not seam to matter, getting it to them did.
I went and cleared me a path up the power line so that I wouldn't get eat up by the briars. I went squirrel hunting at the old home place after that and I killed 5 of the 8 squirrels that I saw. I did make a bad shot on one and it hauled ass out there.
Wanted to blast and cast this morning for squirrels and crappie but couldn't find a squirrel no where after walking for over a mile in hardwoods that was full of hickory nuts and acorns. About 11am I started fishing brushpiles. Only caught 20 on jigs and 8 were over 10''.
I walked the 75 acre tract mostly along the property line. On the ridge at the power line I saw 8 squirrels. Only got a shot at 1 of them and missed it because it was too damn close. I saw atotal of 11 squirrels, 1 fox and a doe.
My intentions today was to blast and cast for squirrels and crappie. After getting up late from working till 2am, then getting squirrel stuff together, boat ready, deciding not to take the boat I got into the woods about 1030 am. I went to the section of game lands at the end of File Road. I saw 2 squirrels and could not get a shot and heard several more. The squirrels were hanging out on the ridge around the lake where there was a lot of hickorytrees. Even though it is thick in there it has the potential for a lot of squirrels.
Not a bad week for fishing. I went with a long time fishing partner, Dot. The weather was good most of the week, rain on Monday, high wind Friday afternoon and moderate winds Saturday. Water was clean, clear, grean and 77*-80* all week. Air temp was low to mid 80's all week. All fish that were counted was an eatable fish. Grunts, pinfish and skates were not counted and we caught a shitload of them. I talked to the guys at Teaches Lair and they said that if I had a witness I could still get a Citation for the release of the 42'' Red Drum on May 10, 2009. We fished long, hard days except for Wednesday when I went netting and Dot slept in and Friday when the wind got so bad that afternoon that we just didn't want to fight it anymore. Sunday- We got there early enough to go fishing that afternoon so we fished AR-296, I have wanted to for a year now. We caught 11 fish and kept 1 blue, 1 puffer and 1 grey trout. I did manage to loose a big spotted trout at the boat. AR296 has potential. I need to fish it a couple more times. Monday- Weather was cloudy and rainy. Caught a mixed bag of 44 flounder, blues, sea bass and puffers. Kept 1 flounder, 5 puffers, 4 blues and a croaker. We fished the Ferry Lane, Big Slough and Deep Hole. Tuesday- Cloudy, no rain. Caught a mixed bag of 47 blues, flounder, sea bass and puffers. Kept 8 puffers, 4 blues, 2 flounder and 1 sea bass. We fished the Ferry Lane, Big Slough and Deep Hole, Inlet and Marvin's Bank. Wednesday-Sunny and HOT. I went netting first thing and got to keep 6 flounder and 1 big croaker. I went with a neighbor that sets crabpots and nets. We worked 8 nets that morning. Caught a mixed bag of 21 flounder and blues. Kept 1 flounder and 5 blues. We fished the Ferry Lane, Big Slough and Deep Hole, Inlet, Marker 13 Slough (3 miles long) and Marvin's Bank. Thursday-Another sunny and hot day. Caught a mixed bag of 33 flounder, blues and puffers. Kept 2 flounder, 2 blues and 1 sea mullet. We fished the Ferry Lane, Big Slough, Deep Hole, Inlet and Marvin's Bank. I did manage to catch a big ass ray in the Inlet. Friday-Sunny and hot to start, changing to cloudy and windy as hell. Caught a mixed bag of 18 flounders, blues, puffers and a triggerfish. Kept 3 puffes, 2 blues and a triggerfish. Ferry Lane, Big Slough, Deep Hole, Inlet and Island Slough. Saturday-Cloudy most of day and windy all day. Caught 16 flounder, blues, sea bass and mullet. Kept 2 blues and a mullet. Ferry Lane, Deep Hole, and Marvin's Bank.
